Photo of the Day: Ta Prohm

The other day we finally visited Angkor Wat. The most important Religious Archaeological site in South East Asia.

I have taken so many photos it will take some time to sort them all out. I will get there and make a post about this amazing site.

In the meantime here is a little preview. A photo taken at Ta Prohm. This Temple is one of the most famous of the site. It was made even more famous by Angelina Jolie and the  Hollywood movie Tomb Ryder.

It is something spectacular, almost unreal how the jungle have grown.

Stay tuned for for the Angkor Wat post…coming soon

  • Welcome to Cambodia: Siem Reap

    Welcome to Cambodia: Siem Reap

Our Thai visa expired and we were not able to extend it a second time. We decided on a trip to Cambodia to visit the temples of Angkor Wat.

We traveled overland from Koh Chang to Siem Reap. It was a very long journey (approx 14 hours). The border crossing was exhausting. It was hot, very hot. We got to the border in Thailand and we were overcharged on the Cambodian visa.

They asked $45 each when it should have been $30! What can you say??? Nothing you have to pay!

After a long wait we got on a pick up that took us to the Cambodian border. From here we had to walk through to get to passport control. It wasn’t a very long walk, maybe 500-800 mt, but the heath was almost unbearable and the backpack was heavy.

I managed to fall down some stairs in the process and bruised my right leg and foot. Fortunately I didn’t break it!

There was a very long queue at passport control so we handed $10 to the police and they let us through…. VIP Treatment, they call it.

After another wait and a ride to the bus station, we finally catch the last bus to get to Siem Reap. We must have spent two hours to cross the border.

We arrived in Siem Reap late in the evening and went to straight to our hostel. Hosteling International Siem Reap. It is a cool place, nice clean room, friendly staff, good chill out area and cheap beer ($0.50 a glass)! Great location, next door to the Night Market.

We have not been to Angkor Wat yet. It is our mission for tomorrow, we will make it for sunrise.

Siem Riep is quite a nice city. It is quite small and a bit dusty. During the day is very, very hot. It cools down a bit at night but still hot. It’s hard to walk around during the day.

Luckily there are plenty bars and cafes to sit and chill with a cold drink. It is really cool to rent a bicycle and stroll around town. There are many rental places and you can get a bicycle for as cheap as $1 per day.

Tuk Tuk are the transport of choice for long distances or if you feel lazy or too hot. They are the best tuk tuk I have seen in Asia so far. Large, comfortable and reasonably cheap. They all sport really cool design.

There is a lot of choice for food: Cambodian, Western, Mexican, Pizza, Barbeque, Vegetarian, etc…. Something for everyone.

There is also lots of choice for shopping. Bring on the Night Market!

And lots of choice for Western style bars on busy Pub Street (little bit too loud and tacky for my taste).

The local currency (Riel) is accepted but all the tourists places have their prices in US Dollars. I was actually very surprised! Your foreign currency will be exchanged in US Dollars, so it is better to bring Dollars with you. The Exchange rates are usually quite fair.

  • Wreck Diving in Koh Chang: HTMS CHANG

Wreck Diving in Koh Chang: HTMS CHANG

After diving in some of the best diving destinations in the world, I would have not thought about scuba diving in Koh Chang.

In Koh Chang, Dom and I were meeting Alfred, a friend of Dom’s he had not seen for few years. Alfred really wanted to do some dives, so we decided to research the area to see what was really worth diving.

To our surprise we found out about a wreck dive that had not been there three year ago, when we last visited the island.

    HTMS CHANG WRECK

The ship was sunk two years ago for the purpose of scuba diving in November 2012.

HTMS Chang is now the largest ship wreck in Thailand.

It has increased the diving tourism of the area, making it a sought after spot for wreck lovers.

    The dive was very dreamlike.

The wreck is in good conditions and there is already an abundance of life growing on it.

There was fantastic visibility, we could see big schools of Barracuda, Batfish, Butterfly fish and so on.

They were all surrounding the wreck.

  • Cony

    Cony

Every cool place has a mascotte.

Paradise Cottage has a very cute little one: Cony.

Cony is a 8 months old white Jack Russell. She loves swimming in the ocean and play with people. You will come to love her as much as you’ll love Paradise.

    We love Cony!

  • Koh Chang: Paradise Cottage

    Koh Chang: Paradise Cottage

When in Koh Chang there is only one place we want to be. This time we have been definitely sucked in by the wonderful atmosphere at Paradise Cottage on Lonely Beach.

Lonely Beach is the party beach of Koh Chang but Paradise Cottage is located quite out from the action. His location makes it the perfect place to chill out. However, it is only a 15 minutes walk from the party bars which still makes it easy if you want a hard night out.

There is a great choice of bungalows from wooden budget ones to concrete bungalows with terrace and sea view. Once you get here you will hardly want to leave. It is easy to spend the whole day chilling in this beautiful spot.

The bungalows are good but the bar/restaurant area is simply awesome. That’s where you can hang out all day. There are 6 huts with hammocks all overlooking the sea. There is also a sandy area with bin bags where you can sunbathe sipping a beer or a cocktail or one of the tasty fruit shakes.

The access to the sea is a bit rocky but it does not really matter. It is part of the beauties of nature.

Nonetheless, what really makes a place very special is its people. Paradise cottage would not be the same without the people that runs it and create the super chilled and friendly  atmosphere.

Upon arrival you are greeted by Julia, a lovely young lady with the unmistakable beautiful smile typical of the locals. She is hands on and always on top of all the reservations. She does a great job at running the bungalows and she is full of interesting tips and information.

The restaurant/bar is run by Pong and Pam, a lovely Thai couple, and Chris a super friendly South African young man that has made Koh Chang his home for the last several years. These guys are the soul of Paradise Cottage Bar and Restaurant. They know their guests and they treat each one as a friend.

They know how to create the perfect atmosphere in paradise. Music plays in the back ground all day long. They always seem to have the perfect tune for each moment of the day. It is quite difficult to leave this place. Why head out to the busy beach when you can enjoy this little corner of heaven?

Food is very delicious, they offer some of the best Thai dishes and some favourite Western dishes. I am addicted to the curries.

This is also the perfect spot to enjoy a beautiful sunset. What’s best then ending your day with a cold drink whilst watching the sun setting over Paradise.

After sunset, they occasionally have live a live DJ mixing chilled house tunes through the evening.
